Trained at the School of Graphic Arts and the Manuel Bejarano National University of Fine Arts, Héctor Ameal worked as a graphic artist in Lima for one of the world's leading advertising agencies, MacCann Erickson. In 1969 he moved to Sitges, a city in Barcelona, where he lived until his death. In 1978 the Palau de la Virreina in Barcelona hosted a monographic exhibition of his pen drawings, organized by the Ynglada-Guillot Foundation. "El Primer Vicesecretario General" was donated by the Foundation to the Museu d'Art Modern de Barcelona and is currently kept in the Gabinete de Dibujos y Grabados of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. At the end of the 1970s the magazine El Viejo Topo regularly illustrated his articles. He made 26 covers for the economic magazine Nueva Empresa immortalizing relevant characters of the Transition process, such as Jordi Pujol, Marcelino Camacho, Fernando Rodríguez Sahagún or Carles Ferrer Salat. In 1983 he was represented by the Philipe Guimiot Art Gallery in Brussels. In 1983, he exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, within the framework of the FIAC and in One-Man-Show format. He exhibited his new work at ARCO'84 and ARCO'85 (One-Man-Show at the Crystal Palace). In 1986 he held another monographic exhibition at the Philippe Guimiot Art Gallery in Brussels and in 1987 he participated in a group exhibition of artists at the Guimiot Gallery in Bologna. In the 1990s he began a long collaboration with the Instituto Peruano de Publicidad in the city of Lima. He has also illustrated numerous books.
