DESCRIPTION

Spanish school; early seventeenth century.
"San Juan".
Carved wood gilded and polychrome.
They present faults and damages caused by xylophages.
Measurements: 107 x 40 x 25 cm.
Round carving made of polychrome wood, in which a male character is represented. Due to the physical characteristics of the figure, it would be a carving belonging to a sculptural group of the XVII century. Before us is presented a beardless character with blond hair, which conveys a melancholic look. He wears an elaborate attire made up of a golden tunic. Knotted at his waist, a golden sash encircles the clothes that reveal his feet and generate a dynamic play of folds.
The physical and formal characteristics of the person depicted indicate that we are looking at the figure of St. John and that, although it has not been preserved, in his hands he could be holding one of his attributes. St. John the Evangelist is the apostle of Jesus to whom is attributed the authorship of the fourth Gospel, of the four Epistles that bear his name and of the book of Revelation. The Gospel of St. John recounts, in detail, various aspects of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, and its writing is usually dated between the years 90 and 100. After the resurrection of Jesus, St. John the Evangelist occupied an important position among the disciples of Jesus.
