The Curso completo ó Diccionario universal de agricultura teórica, práctica, económica, y de medicina rural y veterinaria, was written in French by a Society of agronomists; and ordered by Abbé Rozier and translated into Spanish by Don Juan Álvarez Guerra. It is a reference work on everything related to the organization and maintenance of a farm, clearly influenced by the illustrated current, with a profusion of fine folded plates showing agricultural machinery of the time.
Jean-Baptiste François Rozier was a French botanist and agronomist. Rozier studied at the Jesuit college of Villefranche-sur-Saône and entered the seminary of Saint-Irénée in Lyon. Refusing to enter a major seminary, he preferred to devote himself to science. He was ordained a priest, but lacked a vocation, so he became the administrator of his elder brother's estate in the district of Sainte-Colombe, on the banks of the Rhone, near Vienne, after the death of his father in 1757. He convinced his friends, including Marc Antoine Louis Claret de La Tourrette (1729-1793) and Jean-Emmanuel Gilibert (1741-1814), of his plans to convert the land to pasture. Thus he met Claude Bourgelat (1712-1779), who created a veterinary school in Lyon, where Rozier became professor of botany and materia medica in 1761 and created an important botanical garden. In 1765 he became pedagogical director of the institution, but Bourgelat-who had become director of the Alfort school-was offended by Rozier's success and convinced Bertin's ministry to dismiss him in 1765.
