Size: 54 x 28,5 x 6 cm (closed); 64 x 56,5 x 6 cm (open); 38 x 20 cm (image); 94 x 78 cm (frame).
Triptych made up of three panels topped by a Gothic-inspired mitre arch, with religious scenes framed in concave mouldings, except for the side panels. The central panel depicts the Virgin Mother with the Christ Child in her arms, enthroned as both figures are placed on a large pulpit with an architectural conception whose aesthetic advances the perspectival vision of the Renaissance. Below the pointed arch, which forms the top of the piece, is the figure of Jesus, an adult holding the Gospel and blessing with his right hand. On the right-hand side panel we see the figures of Saint Francis of Assisi, depicted in his usual iconography: the Franciscan sackcloth, with a three-knotted cord tied around his waist. The three knots represent the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. In addition, it also shows the stigmata on the hands and feet, as we can see here, together with the rays that emanate from a heavenly figure, thus showing that it is the biblical passage of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata. The upper part of this section shows an archangel giving his hand to a child figure. On the left, the protagonists are Saint Paul and Saint Anthony of Padua. Aesthetically the work is reminiscent of Antonio of Alatri, known thanks to an inscription on the triptych of the Redeemer, preserved in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Alatri, which is notable for its late Lazio Gothic style and surprising with its innovative iconography.
The whole is worked with descriptive intent. On the one hand, the architectural elements are described with painstaking attention to detail: from the stylised arches to the tracery and the small individual niches that frame the figure of Christ in the upper area, and the representation of the Virgin in the centre of the piece.
