With the composition clearly divided in a celestial area of golden light and an earthly area of brownish tones, the figure of Jesus, dressed with a red mantle, is placed in the upper part. In the lower part of the oil painting, the soldiers observe the miracle in astonishment.
The theme represented is that of the Ascension, gathered in the New Testament, with the Apostles represented in variable number in the different works of art that gather this theme, and many of them count with the presence of the Virgin Mary. This model, in which Christ ascends only towards the heavens, is already found in examples from the 11th century, and was the most common in Western art, being eclipsed to some extent by that of the Ascension of the Virgin during the 17th and 18th centuries.
