In 1929, Jean Deyrolle enrolled in the school of Art and Publicity of Paris where he was initiated to engraving. He then travels around Brittany making studies and sketches of still lifes and landscapes. Thanks to a scholarship he moved to Morocco. In 1944 he entered the language of abstraction. In 1945 he participates in the Salon des Surindependants, in the exhibition of "Twenty years of painting" organized by Jeanne Bucher. The following year, Deyrolle is part of the group of abstract painters of the "second generation" that is grouped around Denise René, along with Dewasne, Marie Raymond, Schneider and Hartung. They were soon joined by Gilioli, Poliakoff and Vasarely. Jean Deyrolle's first personal exhibition takes place in 1948 at the Denise René Gallery (Paris). It was the first of a long series of personal exhibitions in France and abroad. The artist's language becomes freer and freer. His first retrospective is organized in Brussels, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in 1956.
