The painting in bidding represents the city of Havana, the Cuban capital. Its title is a direct reference to the essay of the same name written in 1970 by the Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier, winner of the Cervantes Prize in 1977. The work is a sincere and emotional tribute to Havana with the particular vision of the artist, who evokes in each of its parts some of the most emblematic places of the city, such as the National Capitol and the Malecón, in a labyrinth of forms exploring the duality between the figurative and the abstract. The blue tones invoke calm and depth, while the intricate geometric and cubist play takes the viewer on an exciting visual journey.
Trained in drawing and painting, Julio Sendino has had many group and solo exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. He has been awarded numerous prizes, such as the Castilla y León Regional Prize of the CirculArt 2021 National Plastic Arts Contest, the Salón de Otoño de Valladolid 2019, the San Pedro Regalado de Valladolid Speed Painting Contest 2016 drawing modality and the Honorable Mention of the Primero de Fariña de Toro National Painting Contest (Zamora) 2019, and selections, as in the Painting Contest Province of Valladolid 2022 and 2023, the Sarmiento Painting Award 2022 of La Seca and the Painting Contest ACOR Castilla y León 2012. In 2021 and 2022 he painted the Mural of the Performing Arts at the Casa de las Artes in Laguna de Duero (Valladolid). In 2019 he inaugurated the Mural of the Valdemonjas Winery in Quintanilla de Arriba (Valladolid) made with the encaustic technique. Also in that same year he showed his most recent work at the Rafael Art Gallery in Valladolid. Part of his work can be found in institutions such as the Fundación Municipal de Cultura de Valladolid, the Diputación de Valladolid, the Artkomas Art Center in Kaunas (Lithuania), the European Recycling Platform Spain and in private collections.
