BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Following models by GERMAIN PILON (Paris, ca. 1528-1590), last quarter of the 19th century.
"The Three Graces".
Gilded and silvered bronze.
With stamp "Mechanics of Reduction" on the base.
Measurements: 94 x 44 cm.

On a triform pedestal with Latin inscriptions on the sides and vegetal decoration in the corners rises the bronze sculptural group of the Three Graces, which in this case symbolizes conjugal love. It was made in the late nineteenth century in the image of the monument to the heart of King Henry II, executed in the sixteenth century by Germain Pilon, one of the most important sculptors of the French Renaissance who sculpted the tombs of the French kings of the sixteenth century.
The monument to the heart of Henri II was commissioned in 1561 by Catherine de Medici for her late husband. Placed in the church of the convent of the Celestines in Paris, it was to receive the hearts of the king and queen of France. Germain Pilon sculpted the group of the Graces, and the Italian Dominique Florentin created the triangular base. The marble original is preserved in the Louvre Museum.
