During the nineteenth century the animal-themed sculpture will finally reach a status of its own, within the context of romantic sculpture. Seeking to break away from the classical sculptural ideal, many artists saw in the animal theme a new way of expression, linked to the emotional and irrational nature, in a purely romantic sense.
French sculptor of the late nineteenth century, specialized in the representation of animals, Jules Edmond Masson was mainly dedicated to the sculpture of small format, representing both domestic animals, mainly hunting dogs, and wild animals (deer, goats, hares, wolves ...). He also made some portraits of Napoleon, both bust and equestrian, demonstrating his mastery for the representation of horses. He participated in the Paris Salon, and is currently represented in private collections.
