BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Set of four candlesticks; Germany, second quarter of the nineteenth century.
Patinated iron.
Two of them have inscription and dedication; E. GR and ST Juni 1843.
Measurements: 71 x 19 x 19 cm (x4).
Set of four bronze candlesticks. A similar model is reproduced on page 171 of the book Eissen Statt Gold (Fig. 359). The four pieces have the same design based on a square base that rises in a truncated form to the shaft conceived as a stipe and richly ornamented with vegetal details in the manner of candilieri. The upper area ends in the form of a classic cup with the simulation of a cloth in the central area of the body of the cup. Two of the candlesticks have leaf ornamentation in the lower part of the cup, while the other two have a smooth finish.
The four pieces are modeled after the candlesticks found in the chapel of Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. The palace was built at the end of the 17th century and was considerably enlarged during the 18th century. It includes a very luxurious internal decoration in baroque and rococo styles. During World War II, the palace was badly damaged, but has since been rebuilt.
