During the 19th century, many aspects changed and evolved in the treatment and conception of artistic genres. In France, new aspects revolving around the female figure and its idealization were propagated and established. Traditionally portrayed in a graceful, seductive manner or represented with luxurious attire and external adornments, it was during this century when their figure was worked on in a more realistic way, that is to say, showing them in intimate moments in which they performed their daily tasks. The representations of women were increasingly abundant, starring in gender scenes in which they appeared in their occupations and activities that society determined appropriate. There were also abundant samples of the upper classes in which young women appeared reading, sewing or singing. Artists such as Fragonard revealed to society different facets of the usual life of women, presenting young women related to the bourgeoisie and aristocracy at different times of the day, such as girls attending music lessons or reading, showing the education that some women could receive at home. The theme within the portrait related to this habit was enhanced throughout the nineteenth century, reflecting at the same time, the religious and moral indoctrination that every woman should possess. This "Reader", belonging to the French school of the 19th century, has been captured in a moment of self-absorption. The way she holds the book, as well as her clothing, jewelry and make-up, indicate her good position in society.
