Strabo (Amasia, Pontus, c. 64 or 63 B.C.-c. 23 or 24 A.D.), was a Greek geographer and historian known mainly for his work Geography, in 17 books.

About thirty manuscripts, some only fragments, of the Geography have survived to the present day. Most of them are medieval copies, but there are also fragments of papyri copied between the 1st and 4th century AD. In antiquity this work was little cited, but hundreds of copies were produced during the Byzantine period. The first Latin translation appeared in the West in Rome around 1469. The first printed edition in Greek was published in Venice in 1516. Isaac Casaubon, a Renaissance humanist scholar, produced the first critical edition of the Greek text in 1587. Since then, scholars have published numerous editions, noting textual variants, up to the 21st century.
