A missal is a liturgical book that contains the instructions and texts necessary for the celebration of the Mass throughout the liturgical year. Versions differ according to liturgical tradition, time and purpose, as some missals are intended for a priest to celebrate Mass publicly and others for private, lay use. The texts of the most common Eucharistic liturgy in the world, the Mass of Paul VI of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, are contained in the 1970 edition of the Roman Missal. In application of the decision of the Council of Trent, Pope Pius V promulgated, in the Apostolic Constitution Quo primum of July 14, 1570, an edition of the Roman Missal that was to be of obligatory use throughout the Latin Church, except in cases where another liturgical rite existed that could be proven to have been in use for at least two centuries.
