Chris Steele-Perkins began his studies in psychology at Newcastle University, working at the same time as a photographer and picture editor for the student newspaper. In 1971, with his move to London, he began his beginnings as a freelance photographer working on a photo-documentary project in Bangladesh where he would collaborate with aid organizations and travel missions, while working in areas related to urban poverty in Britain. In the 1979s he began working for Magnum Photos, focusing his work on projects in Africa, America and Lebanon. These trips served him as a photographic exploration on which he made reflective publications about life and the different situations suffered by Third World countries, being "Children doing handstands" an example of his work.
During his career he has won several awards and recognitions such as the Tom Hopkinson Award' for British photojournalism (1988), Oscar Barnack Award' (1988), 'The Robert Capa Gold Medal (1989), 'Cooperative Society Award' and 'One World Award', for the film 'Dying for Publicity' (1994), 'La Nacion National Photojournalism Award' (1994), World Press Award, 'Everyday Life' (2000), Sasakawa Foundation Fellowship (2004, 2011), Terrence Donovan Award from the Royal Photographic Society (2008), and the Arts Council GB Award (2010).
