DESCRIPTION

Spanish school, XIII-XIV century.
"Christ blessing".
Carved and polychrome wood.
Measurements 107 x 29 x 21 cm.
Wood carving from medieval times and Spanish school. It represents Christ in full body, in attitude of blessing. Originally conceived for a frontal contemplation, it has a niche on the back to keep a relic. This is a high quality carving, belonging to the full Gothic style. Jesus, characterized as a young man with a hairless face, almond-shaped eyes and a broad, clear forehead, subtly bows his head in a sign of humility and raises the index and middle fingers of his left hand. The gesture of blessing alludes to the dual nature of Christ, human and divine. With his left hand he holds the mantle, and this casual gesture imprints a cascade of naturalistic folds, forming a drapery resolved with mastery. Under the cloak, the red tunic peeks out, falling to the ground, leaving the tips of the feet visible.
