Jansen's language included portraits of children in domestic settings such as the one presented here. In fact, Jansen was part of the Modern Breakthrough movement, a strong movement of naturalism that replaced Romanticism in the late 19th century.
Trained at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, where he later taught, Luplau Janssen furthered his studies at the PS Kroyer School of Painting, where he was influenced by the Impressionist approach to light. Janssen's debut at the Royal Danish Academy's Spring Exhibition in Charlottenborg won him many accolades, including prizes in 1894, 1896 and 1898. He exhibited extensively, including at the Royal Danish Academy until 1902, then at the Free Exhibition and the Berlin Secession. In 1909 he traveled to Paris where he attended the Ranon Academy. He exhibited at The Seccession in Berlin until 1927 alongside Bonnard, Cezanne and Gustave Klimt. Janssen's work can be found in the Frederiksborg Museum, including a portrait of the funeral of Christian IX.
