BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ÉMILE BRUCHON (France, late 19th - early 20th century).
"Cupids", Napoleon III period.
Pair of sculptures in bronze.
Signed.
In good condition.
Measurements: 62 x 19 x 19 cm.

In classical mythology, Cupid - son of Venus, goddess of love, beauty and fertility, and Mars, god of war - was the Roman god of amorous desire, erotic love, attraction and reflection. Cupid is depicted with a bow and arrow or quiver representing his source of power. A person shot by Cupid's arrow will be filled with uncontrollable desire.
Émile Bruchon trained as a sculptor as a disciple of Mathurin Moreau. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1880, where he showed the model of the sculptural group he made for the tomb of Mademoiselle Ruel (Père-Lachaise cemetery, Paris). He worked mainly on mythological themes, sculptural groups and funerary monuments.
