DESCRIPTION

FERNANDO SANCHEZ CALDERÓN (Valladolid, 1951-2016).
"Lacquered in white", 1994.
Mixed media on canvas.
Signed and dated. Dated and titled on the back.
Measurements: 100 x 65 cm.
In the decade of the nineties, the painting of Fernando Sanchez Calderon is resolved in an expressive abstraction that in spite of the preeminence of bands and geometric elements, it does not try to subsume the composition to the orthogonal or mathematical rigor but, on the contrary, to enhance the brushstroke and the pictorial values.
He received his artistic training at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he graduated, and later obtained his doctorate at the University of Salamanca, where he worked as a professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Between 1970 and 1975 he received a scholarship from the Spanish Institute of Emigration and in 1982 he obtained a scholarship for the Investigation of New Expressive Forms from the Ministry of Culture. His first creations are framed within the figuration, being his work known in the mid-seventies after being selected to participate in the Biennial of Sao Paulo in 1977. In the eighties his painting is oriented towards abstraction and is influenced, in the first years of the decade, by abstract expressionism. He had his first individual exhibition in 1974 at the Stadium Gallery in Valladolid, and later exhibited in Segovia, Almagro, Madrid, Santander, and many others. He has participated in important group exhibitions, among which include: Contemporary Spanish Painting (1974) at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (Portugal), III International Cairo Biennial (1988) in Egypt and XIII Salón de los 16 (1993) at the Velázquez Palace in Madrid's Retiro Park.
