The Birth of the Virgin has been represented in this Spanish interior painting taking as a model contemporary paintings of Flemish school. During the Baroque period, the dialogue between both traditions was fluid and the domestic treatment of sacred themes was a contribution from Flanders that Spanish painters adapted to their own language. Thus, we see a group of women, caregivers, midwives and servants, who surround the small body and attend to it with delicate gestures. In the background, Saint Anne is recovering from childbirth on a canopied bed, while a ladle of broth is brought to her. A checkered floor marks the separation between the two spaces, emphasizing the perspective. Each figure has been worked individually in the physiognomic features and clothing. The whole is characterized by narrative detail and plastic richness. Only the irruption of a cloud of seraphs alters the domestic and profane appearance of the scene.
