Archie Gittes trained in art in Boston and Chicago. In the School of Fine Arts and Crafts of Boston he has as teacher Charles Hopkinson (1869-1962), painter specialized in the genre of the portrait. After traveling throughout Europe thanks to a scholarship, in 1929 he settles in Paris and attends the Colarossi and Grande-Chaumier schools. He participates in a group exhibition of American artists at the Salon d'Automne, Paris (1930). For almost twenty years he lives in Genoa, Palma and Deiá. He exhibits for the first time in Mallorca in 1940 at the Galerías Costa, and later at the Círculo de Bellas Artes (1941) and at the Galerías Quint (1946). During his stay in Mallorca he received several awards from the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Palma. Later he returns to the U.S.A. and settles in Boston. The Museum of Mallorca dedicated a retrospective to him in 1987. His work is kept in the Ajuntament de Palma, the Museu de Mallorca and "Sa Nostra", Caixa de Balears, among others.
