"La Tauromaquia" is a series of thirty-three engravings published in 1816, to which must be added another eleven prints, called unpublished because they were not included in that first edition due to small defects, although they are equally well known engravings.
Goya had the idea of dedicating a series of engravings to bullfighting since the first years of the 19th century, and he was working on it slowly, without a very concrete plan, probably due to the interruption caused by the war. According to several authors, Goya's initial intention was to illustrate some passages of Nicolás Fernández de Moratín's "Carta histórica sobre el origen y progreso de las corridas de toros en España" (1777). However, the artist surpassed this original idea and completed the series with personal bullfighting events and memories outside of Moratín's work, especially some famous lances of the time.
