His work includes theater, poetry and prose, and he has been considered one of the last great writers of Spanish Baroque literature. He studied law in Salamanca, where he produced a comedy entitled Amor y obligación, which was performed in 1627. He became secretary to the Count of Oropesa and in 1654 was appointed secretary of state and private secretary to Philip IV. He later obtained the lucrative post of chronicler of the Indies and, upon receiving orders in 1667, severed his relationship with the stage. He died in Madrid on April 19, 1686.
