The work responds to a need to show the customs and popular characteristics that describe the society of the Philippines. During the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century, costumbrismo was an artistic trend, which achieved great recognition. In the case of Philippine painters, this theme was of great importance, since despite being a Spanish colony, there was a great lack of knowledge of both its population and its customs.
