The Fables attributed to Gaius Julius Hyginus are the most complete collection of classical myths in Latin language. It is one of the few books of the Antiquity of which no manuscript has been preserved, but it is known from the editio princeps (1535).
Gaius Julius Hyginus was a famous Latin writer, a native, according to Suetonius, of Hispania or Alexandria.1 He was a freedman of Augustus and was at the head of the Palatine Library in Rome, in whose classrooms he taught philosophy.
