Juan de Hevia Bolaños (Oviedo, 1570-Lima, Peru, 1623). Spanish jurist.

In 1603, two years before the first edition of Don Quixote, without previous premonitory indications and outside the usual academic circles, a work titled Curia Filípica appears published in Lima, then capital of the prosperous Viceroyalty of Peru. It deals with the various types of civil and criminal trials, genuine subjects of procedural law. It is written in Spanish and not in Latin, and is signed by a fellow countryman, with no academic degree in jurisprudence, who claims to be a native of Oviedo. Thus began the greatest publishing adventure of our historical legal literature. The book was a resounding success, as it went through nine consecutive editions. This encouraged the author to publish in 1617 another work entitled Labyrinth of land and naval commerce, which deals with the main institutions of commercial law. This new text was also immediately published in five successive editions, the last in Latin. After the death of the author, in the most absolute misery, an astute editor unites the two works in a single volume, under the title First and Second part of the Curia Philipica. And so the editions continue to follow one after the other, numbering twenty-four over the course of two centuries. Other authors are dedicated to comment and illustrate the work of the illustrious Oviedo native.
