Pedro Salazar de Mendoza was a Spanish secular clergyman and historian. Pedro Salazar y Mendoza studied at the University of Salamanca and devoted himself to religion. He was administrator of the Hospital of San Juan de Toledo and, in 1614, canon of the cathedral of Santa Maria de Toledo.He worked as a biographer and chronicler and became an expert in genealogy. He was accused of lineageism and of altering the lineages of others according to his wishes or the sums paid by his patrons. In charge of the doctrinal orthodoxy of paintings in the city's governing council, he became a friend and protector of the painter El Greco, from whom he commissioned numerous paintings.
