John of Mandeville is the name given to the compiler of The Travels of John of Mandeville, or The Book of the Wonders of the World, a book recounting the author's alleged travels, first circulated between 1357 and 1371 AD. The book became very popular in its time and, despite its fantastic and unreal nature, was used as a reference work by such famous adventurers as Christopher Columbus himself.
