This canvas is a faithful follower of the homonymous work made by Murillo around the year 1668-1669, today conserved in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville. The painting is part of a series of paintings commissioned to Murillo by the Capuchin Order for the church of their convent in Seville. The composition symbolizes the culminating moment in the life of St. Francis of Assisi, that is, when he decides to renounce all his material goods to embrace the religious life. Other painters such as Ribalta had already depicted this theme.
