DESCRIPTION

Japanese embroidery. MEIJI period, 19th century.
"Landscape with temples".
In silk with small details of gold thread.
Presents restorations and faults.
Measurements. 100 x 178 cm; 191 x 123 cm (frame).

Delicate Japanese embroidery from the Meiji period representing a Zen garden with sanctuaries idyllically integrated with nature, as can be seen in the famous sacred parks of Kyoto or Tokyo. The different levels of the grounds are linked by simple stairways flanked by manicured bushes and slender trees. Buddhist and Shinto temples coexist in these sites dedicated to meditation. The embroidery has used silk threads in shades of ochre and sienna that accentuate the melancholic and withdrawn atmosphere that the scene is intended to convey. The craftsman shows a bold mastery of embroidery, even simulating what could be a painting on wood. Japanese textile artists of this period have never been surpassed.
